Transmitter tip
How Far Will It Reach?
What sets the range of a low power AM transmitter, and how to extend it.
How far your signal reaches depends mostly on:
- the type of aerial, and how well it is tuned
- a good ground system, which is essential for longer distances
- local conditions such as tall buildings and hills
- the frequency: with a short aerial, the higher the frequency the greater the range
With the supplied aerial
The Spitfire and Hurricane come with a basic wire aerial for setting up and testing. With it you will typically get up to about 200 feet, depending on local conditions, and the signal should be strong everywhere in your home.
To get the most range
Use an outdoor base-loaded vertical aerial, or similar, with a good ground system. Installed close to ground level, expect up to 200–500 m. Range increases further when the aerial is raised to 20 feet or more, again depending on local conditions.
